Deborah Jean Palfrey (March 18, 1956 - May 1, 2008)[1], nicknamed "The D.C. Madam," was the founder and owner of Pamela Martin and Associates, an escort agency that operated for thirteen years in the Washington, D.C. area and provided services to many prominent figures in the area, including Senator David Vitter (R - La.) and Deputy Secretary of State Randall Tobias. After being convicted for money laundering, racketeering, and mail fraud, Palfrey committed suicide by hanging herself in a storage shed at her mother's house in Tarpon Springs, Florida. In the note that she left for her mother, Palfrey said that "I cannot live the next 6-8 years behind bars for what both you & I have come to regard as this 'modern day lynching,' only to come out of prison in my late 50's a broken, penniless, & very much alone woman.” [2]
